i love video games i really really really do but lately they have been testing me
#first drgn age and now c/itizen sleeper 2...#i'm honestly confused as fuck#weird thing to ask in a post bldrs gate world but do ppl just not want to make rpgs anymore...?#2 games in a row that feel like the writers created characters with very set-in-stone expectations for audience reaction#and an incredible aversion to players not meeting those expectations#the first contract with juni in cs2 was so bizarre#the character was very clearly set up to appear like she was hiding something/putting up a front#though the game seemed confused on whether it thought the player character/the player was supposed to have caught onto this#so the twist felt super weird#and then the game clearly expects ou to immediately side with her after her betrayal#even though you have /very good reasons/ to tell her to fuck off#then seemingly in the middle of the argument the game forgets everything you said up to that point?#and forces you to do a 180#and when another character joins asking why the fuck you're letting juni get away with this#all you can say is 'it's ok we can trust her'#....after i just physically fought her???#i'm being a big baby but this ruined my evening :( i really looked forward to this game as well#at least this was only the very beginning so maybe the writing for other characters will be better#i'm starting to feel like a whiny bitch for saying this#i don't want to be shitting on stuff all the time either#but man.... i just want some good writing...#on a lighter note though the juni thing reminded me so much of how i used to write characters for my dnd campaigns lol#'ah yes i'm creating this intricate character with a hidden backstory'#'but they'll be reticent to share that backstory#of course making them seem mysterious rather than bland and annoying#and when they inevitably reveal that they've been lying to the party the whole time#the party will of course be blown away by their intricate backstory and fleshed-out personality#that i still haven't really told them all that much about!

do linux users generally frown on using non-native software? i noticed some people tend to recommend linux-native FOSS alternatives to new users without offering "also, the software you're used to works with Wine" as an option, or they just outright say "You Don't Need Wine." it's a nice thought, but as a person who Actually Likes Recommending Free Alternatives, it's never a 1-to-1 equivalent and a lot of people don't have the time to adjust to a new workflow, or are actually obligated to use "industry standard" software for their work
idk how people expect to win over gamers/artists/whatever by telling them "you're just gonna have to give up a lot of things" when it's not necessarily even true... and i have seen multiple artists saying that whether or not CSP worked would decide whether or not they stuck with linux. i think maybe there's a "cultural" disconnect there, where someone who's not a visual artist/musician/etc might not understand why the lack of a single tool would be a dealbreaker
#this is rambly i'm just sort of thinking out loud. i dont mean to Discourse i just think it's interesting#silly storie#also i hate adobe but photoshop was the only program i've tried that had a decent text tool that didn't ignore font kerning settings#so You Know I Put Photoshop CS2 (free) On Here

omg what video games do u like!
You would not believe the joy I felt when I received this ask oml
Atm I've been getting through the Halo games and I'm loving them. I'm a bit of the way through 3 now it's so fucking good. The HUD being different in this one and it's really cool I like how it looks more like you are wearing the Spartan helmet instead of just a normal game HUD. Also the graphics are a lot nicer and I enjoy the feel of it compared to 2 which I didn't enjoy as much bc it was just a bit barren if that's the right word? Like the look and feel of it was a bit empty and meh, also did not like playing as the Arbiter but I think that's just a me thing. CE had a charm to it but overall I think 3 has been better so far, but to be fair I haven't finished it yet so who knows. Also the soundtracks to these games are so fucking good.
Also trying to max out the achievements in Terraria which is going cool but the new update that's going to be coming out during the year is going to be adding new ones apparently so that's going to be fun ish. I've got 107 out of the 115 so wish me luck in getting the rest of them before more get added lmao. Terraria is probably my fave non-story game of all time right now and has been for about three years now (I have nearly 523 hours in it now... I got it during covid okay 💀💀). Absolutely class, highly recommend as a game to put on a podcast in the background and mindlessly grind at for hourssss
Also!!! First ever video game obsession (that wasn't minecraft when I was like 6) was the Portal games which I was obsessed with at like 15 and still have a major soft spot for them tbh. Also fucking love TF2, it's like the only multiplayer FPS I enjoy lol (bc people don't really talk in and keep mostly to themselves lmao) Like, I tried CS2 and hated it. L4D 1 + 2 are also goated tbh (and the multiplayer for that is pretty good too but I haven't played it too much without friends) I've played through those maps so many times, L4D2 and Terraria are usually my default games I suggest to play with people when I make other friends who play videogames lmao. Half Life is probably my favourite game series atm, i finished them during the summer and was trying to max out the achievements in HL2 like I was in Terraria but about halfway through that was the anniversary update that combined HL2, HL2 EP1 + HL2 EP2 into one game and all the achievements went into the one game too so I had like fifty more I had to do other than the original 10 ish I had left for HL2 lmao.
Honourable mentions bc this is getting long as helllll:
Assassin's Creed 2 (can't wait for shadows to come out it looks sick as fuckkkkkk). Doom 64 (the only doom game I've played so far but I love it. I've got Doom 2016 in my library ready to play lmao). Red Dead Redemption 2 (Love it but it's just stopped working properly on my computer. I think I fucked up some of the settings in it oops). Leaf Blower Revolution (A dumb idle game I have gotten embarrassingly obsessed with. It was my most played game last year lmaoooo)
Anyway sorry this was long lmao unless this was somehow interesting to you in which case your welcome. Pls feel free to yap in return about whatever videogames, or anything else, you enjoy lol I love listening to people yap fr
#the yapper yaps#the yapper answers#can you tell I like valve games#I think this might be the longest reply to an ask I've ever give oh my lord I am so sorry#thank you sm for the ask tho moot I enjoyed answering it <3333

I'm so unstable today and my brain is going insane thinking about CS2 faux visual novel. I wanna start working on it. So much. I'm putting it off though, because 1) I Want My Desk Set Up, 2) I need to finish the Confession Scene writing thing and 3) this means I have to watch the original CS2, made in the years 2015-2016. Which is interesting? I thought it came out in 2015, but maybe I just thought that because it took ten months to make and most of that happened in 2015, it was finished February of 2016.
ANYWAY. Like I said before I'm highkey afraid of watching it because I KNOW how much I fumbled on certain subjects, and I do know that I showed really triggering content because I used to be REALLY irresponsible with what I portrayed in my videos back then. Like there's an active self-harm scene. I should not have done that. I should have known BETTER THAN THAT.
That's not even why I started writing this. The thought that occurred to me was. What do I do about music. In all of my videos I just used video game music but like... am I still allowed to do that?? Is that okay these days??? If I DID just use video game music I would have to be So careful with what I used, lest I get slam dunked with copyright. I Could just look around for F2U stuff on Youtube, but...
I can't imagine using anything but 'Chill and Rigor' from 999 during The Big Trauma Scene........ it just fits so well.......
#idk. idk. something i need to think on#i have PLENTY of time like#music is probably gonna be the last thing i do irt the whole project#bailey musings#cold skin

anuyway i want to enjoy citizen sleeper 2 but it is giving me the same problems as the first but worse jd;lfldjskf. with the first i felt that i couldn't really take the story slow because any time a character indicated i had a new task to do, i would very anxiously speed ahead because there are so many variables you have to have set in order to have a good chance of completing the task in time. so i wouldn't actually read the rest of the story piece lol. and with cs2 the mechanics are SO MUCH MORE COMPLICATED so i'm even more inclined to anxiously speed through to the task.
i'm playing on easy mode and still struggling so goddamn much but i guess maybe a difference is that if all your dice break you don't die in easy but you die in a harder mode? bc from what i did hear i was expecting to die and did not. so i just kinda disheartenedly sped through a bunch of OTHER stuff waiting for a death screen but it never came...... so............................ idk.
i wanna get ~back in touch~ with the characters who are there from the first game and it does hit hard when they do cross paths but i am just so annoyed at how much is stacked against us in ways that kind of interfere with sinking into the story. i think i just gotta restart honestly and see where that lands me now that i have a slightly better idea of what's needed, but i still don't think that'll help with the bad luck player punishments.
#cs tag#jkla;jskdflkj im rly bad at these things so i was already kinda struggling with it all in cs1#and i was apprehensive bc of the additional mechanics i kept hearing about and i was right to be#but i wanna request it in an upcoming exchange so i wanna at least know what cs2 entails!#just. idk. i don't feel like i have enough control to make it enjoyable.

Welcome back to "Icon Making With Killian: An Intro to the 'Lost' Art of LiveJournal Icons"
aka, you didn't think I was one and done, right?
This tutorial was written in Photoshop 2020, but you can probably recreate it in as far back as CS2-ish (since I still use the same sort of techniques I've been using since then, lmao). It also assumes basic understanding of the software, though I've tried to be as clear as possible throughout.
I was possessed with a need to both make an icon of Madara's new event card and then write a tutorial, so let's all be proud that I busted it out before Halloween 💪
I started with the bloomed art of Madara from The Howling Forest★Lupine Halloween event (image from the Halloween 2024 campaign announcement, because the event hasn't started yet).

Since there's a lot of extra text & etc on this, I knew I'd be cropping it pretty close. I started with a blank 100x100 canvas, pasted the original image in, and then resized + rotated it until I liked the composition/crop.
First up, I wanted to get some cobwebs in here (for Halloween!), but didn't want them to overwhelm the whole icon. I used a texture from lookslikerain, set to Lighten, and rotated it a bit before erasing anything covering his face.
Next, I used another texture from lookslikerain and set it to Darken. There's a lot of green in the images for this event and I wanna pull some of that back into the icon, since it most got cropped out.
Time for light textures!!! I used a bunch in this icon~ I started with one from lookslikerain (can you tell I love their resources?), rotated it, and set the layer to Lighten, before deciding that it was too harsh. I used a small, soft brush set to 30% Opacity to erase most of the texture from his face, as well as softening the edges of the light.
The next few light textures are kinda subtle, but overall add to the icon. I'd say sometimes less is more, but I'm a maximalist at heart XD For the next few steps, just assume that the light textures were rotated/resized/moved/etc as I saw fit. I used yet another texture from lookslikerain, set to Lighten, and tucked in the bottom right corner.
This light texture from Sanami276 is also set to Screen. I moved it around to get just a bit of orange in the top left corner- gotta keep those Halloween colors in there!! :D
I wanted some more depth/texture in the upper left corner, so I decided to use part of a texture from Sanami276.
However, it's way to harsh to just throw in there like that...at least not for my purposes. I decided to invert the colors and recolor the black parts orange. My go-to method is with a Gradient Map adjustment layer. The easiest place to find it is in the Adjustments window.
I then used these colors for the gradient itself: #e7b676 at 0% and #ececec at 100%.
And it left the texture looking appropriately orange! I then pasted it into the actual icon, moved it so the rectangles were in the upper left corner, and set the layer to Darken.
Now for more light textures!! I used a couple from ianthinae, set them to Lighten, and went to town. I cut them up, moved them around, rotated them...just about anything to make them fit where I wanted. I love playing with light textures in general, and I find that even when I use similar ones a lot, they can look very different depending on how they're place.
Finally, I used part of a large grunge-y texture that I've unfortunately lost the source to D: I inverted it and set the layer to Multiply, before moving it around a bunch until I found a spot that looked good.
And with that, it's done! You've now got some new skills to make icons with~
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask, and I'll answer as best I can- as long as it's not about making icons in other software D: I only know Photoshop (and Paint Shop Pro, but I don't think anyone uses that anymore). If there are any other icons of mine you're interested in seeing tutorials for - or even just specific techniques! - just lemme know. I love helping :D
Also, I'm happy to share where I get icon resources from. I have a whole post dedicated to that on my DW graphics journal, though tbh that's the best place to talk to me about making graphics in general. But I will absolutely answer asks/replies/etc about icons here on tumblr, don't worry!!!!

ez ripping color palettes from photos in photoshop
so this is taken from a now-defunct site called mangatutorials.com which was active in the early 2010s when i was a baby artist. i used to use this a lot. the original can be found here. unfortunately this does not work in photopea as there is no indexed color function, but i have an old copy of photoshop cs6 so thats what i use. i think cs2 or cs3 is available for free tho
step 1
open this image in photoshop.
save a second copy of it. do not save over this image. do not lose this image it is such a massive pain to find if you ever lose it. save it in like 5 places. back it up to external storage, just don't lose it
step 2
open your photo of choice in a separate photoshop tab. i used the nice photo of ice cream i took.
then, go to image > mode > indexed color. this window should pop up.
set palette to 'local (selective)', dither to none, and set your number of colors to however many colors you want in your palette. i use 30-40 but sometimes ill go up to like 50. hit OK
step 3
go back to the tab with the pic from step 1. PLEASE dont save over the image, save it as a copy before you make any edits of it. anyways again, go to image > mode > indexed color - but this time, you will want to set palette to previous. hit OK
voila, you have your nice color palette ready to go. enjoy.
step 4 (optional)
you may want to tweak your color palette to be more warm/cold/etc. in that case, go to image > mode > rgb color. then mess around with color balance/gradient maps/selective color/etc until you like what you have.
have fun and be yourself
#tutorial#art tutorial#save#im always losing this image and the tutorial is no longer online since mangatutorials no longer exists but its something i use ALL the time#so i wanted to back it up somewhere i could easily find lol

Sega Saturn - World Advanced Daisenryaku Koutetsu no Senpuu (Iron Storm)
Title: World Advanced Daisenryaku Koutetsu no Senpuu / ワールドアドバンスド大戦略 ~鋼鉄の戦風~
Developer/Publisher: Sega CS2 / SystemSoft
Release date: 22 September 1995
Catalogue No.: GS-9025
Genre: Strategy
Koutetsu no Senpuu aka Iron Storm is a traditional turn-based strategy game. The original Japanese release was the second entry in Sega's Advanced Daisenryaku series, with gameplay very similar to that of its 16-bit predecessor, changing some details and using 3D animations for the combat cutscenes. The game uses a hex-based map and features fog-of-war, weather, unit experience, unit upgrading, supply, and other common strategy wargame features.
Unlike the previous game, three campaigns are available instead of one. Japanese, as well as United States forces, can be commanded now in addition to German units. The scenarios that are played during a campaign can change depending on the battle results - a successful player may invade North America for example. There are also ten scenarios with pre-set forces separately available for selection in Standard Mode, during which the control of all involved armies can be switched to a human player.

I made a video on how to fix TF2's current issue with bots running around and disrupting the game on official Valve servers. In summary we know that valve won't keep VAC up to date, as they don't like treadmill work, so anyone using botting programs won't actually get banned by it. We also know that valve doesn't want to port over the work they did on CS:GO and now on CS2, if it was an easy task they would've done so already. Also it wouldn't work, since it could likely be abused and it won't do anything about idle bots, since it's only designed to catch aimbots.
The solution is to leave it to the community. The reason being that community servers actually have the ability to be moderated.
You can actually have a server administrator that can ban known bot accounts, the servers can also have vote ban enabled making it quick and easy to ban new bots and cheaters.
The easiest way to implement that would be to make matchmaking function like the old quickplay system. What this does is that it directs players to any public server that fulfill the requirements of what could be considered a "vanilla" TF2 experience.
Alongside this change Valve just needs to contact big server hosters such as skial, Uncle Dane etc. to coordinate with them so they can set up servers that meet these requirements.
There are also other benefits of returning to the quickplay system such as:
Being able to vote for any map in the map rotation rather than just the same map or two randomly choices from the map rotation.
Being able to switch teams whenever there's an open slot
Being able to join servers ad-hoc from the server browser or your friends in the steam interface if they re enable that
Being able to spectate other players
Joining a friend's servers through the party feature could also be made a lot smoother by just letting you join as soon as slot is open.
All in all it's not that much work on Valve's part and would make the game perfectly playable and also better than it is today.

Your cs2 clips are so cool! How long have you been playing??? What’re your settings???
Thank you! I’ve been playing for nearly 2 years now (1 year, 11 months, and 2 days to be exact). Still learning so much everyday, but that’s what makes the game exciting.
You can find my entire config here! https://settings.gg/jyn2x

Let me first say that I am no expert on competitive FPS games nor do I spend a lot of time on the extremely small details of competitive FPS games. This is more of a general experience and thus, should be taken that way.
With that out of the way, I recently played Counter Strike 2 for about an hour just to see what it's like. And, to me, CS2 and very much similar to CSGO that I don't really see the point of changing the name of it to CS2.
The first and obvious difference that I noticed is the overall graphics in a match are...better...than they were in CSGO but I don't think they're all that much improved. The only other difference that I noticed is the UI and menus are different but are just as easy to navigate. Something I did notice that I don't really like that they changed is that I can no longer set the bot difficulty when I do the practice with bots thing and I wish they had kept that but oh well.
Other than those things, I didn't notice any other differences. The guns all look, sound and feel the same to me. It's also kind of sad that the only map that I saw as new was called Ancient, other than that, the maps were all just carried forth from CSGO. I just, I just don't understand what Valve was thinking there. This is their big competitive FPS game and this is the like the most major thing to happen to it in over a decade and you're telling me that not a single person over at Valve thought it would be a good idea to have like five or six new maps when CS2 launches? Just makes absolutely no sense to me. Either way, after my hour, I was just not feeling it with CS2 and won't be playing it further. I had like 70 hours into CSGO but, CS2 just doesn't to it for me.
